So I bought the game on steam since I was unable to recall how I was able to install cod2 off of the cds I bought in 2006.

Had trouble with slow startup.

found a webpage with this info
Go to this directory: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Call of Duty 2\"
Right click on "CoD2MP_s.exe"
Select Properties
Click on compatibility tab
Under compatibility mode select Windows XP (service pack 3)
Click on run this program as an administrator
Click ok

The following might be useful if you have trouble with COD2 finding steam, otherwise, I would suggest not doing them:

Right click on "CoD2MP_s.exe"
Select "show more options" at the bottom of the menu
Click on Create Shortcut.
There should now be a shortcut in that folder next to the CoD2MP_s
Drag it to the desktop, you should be able to run the game without steam running

Go to this directory: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\
hold down the ctrl key and select
steam.dll
steam2.dll
and then right click on one of those selected files,
click on "copy" at the bottom of the pop-up menu, then go to:
the folder: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Call of Duty 2\"

then right click in that folder and click on "paste" at the top, you now have a copy of steam.dll and steam2.dll in this folder.

Awesome find Borch. I had the same issue with installed cod2 on my new computer a few years back. I tried to run it in compatibility mode so that the boot wasnt so long, but then it wasn't able to find steam. Your second set of instructions worked perfectly and now it boots up in seconds. Thanks!
